ABOUT THE OWNER
Dr. Ginneh Akbar
WHO AM I? I am a licensed psychotherapist who has nearly 20 years of experience. My practice experience has reflected my commitment and passion for children, teens, and families, particularly those who have been impacted by trauma.
I am client-centered, strengths-based, and I approach all problems bio-psycho-social-cultural-spiritual perspective. I am fat-positive, sex-positive, kink-friendly and identity-affirming. Politically, I am progressive and I care greatly about social justice issues, both professionally and personally.
My extensive practice experience has reflected my commitment and passion for child welfare and families who have been impacted by trauma. My work has primarily focused on children and families, providing clinical services in various settings including community mental health and child welfare agencies. I have worked in direct practice, ranging in positions from child welfare investigations to providing evidence-based, trauma-focused interventions like Child Parent Psychotherapy and TF-CBT. Additionally, I have served in administrative positions providing training and reflective supervision to social workers and therapists.
When my oldest daughter, was diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder at 11 months old, I was inspired to become an advocate for children with developmental delays and expanded my practice to include early intervention and infant mental health. I continue to work in the field of early intervention as a social worker and consultant, completing assessments and supporting families of children with new diagnoses.
My practice interests include organizational trauma in the helping professions, sustainability, green social work, and environmental racism, social media, and social work ethics in child welfare, which was the focus of my dissertation. I received my B.S. in Social Work from the University of Maryland Baltimore County, my MSW from Temple University, and my Doctorate in Clinical Social Work from the University of Pennsylvania, where I have taught as an adjunct lecturer.
